I Am Kannagi tells a story within a story – connecting the 2000-year-old story of Goddess Kannagi’s flight into exile with contemporary experiences of forced migration. Kannagi was forced from her home by the misdeeds of her husband, yet passionately defends him against injustice in their chosen homeland. A young Sri Lankan Tamil women seeking asylum in Sydney, must find her own voice as she struggles to navigate the complexities of marriage and the rules of the detention system.
